Abstract:
The rapid emergence of generative AI has sparked a paradigm shift in language education, prompting a critical evaluation of how technology can support—rather than replace—the human factor in teaching. This presentation addresses the conference theme, "Mission (im)possible: Human in the age of AI," by reporting on a long-term, practice-based case study conducted at Ruppin Academic College. The study examines the six-year integration of Magnilearn (ML), an AI-powered English language learning platform, into an intensive pre-academic program. While the "disruptive presence" of AI often raises concerns regarding academic integrity and cognitive development, this session explores the "challenges and promises" of using AI as a sophisticated pedagogical partner. The platform was implemented as a complementary component to face-to-face instruction, utilizing a nano-learning methodology that delivers short, focused units. By adapting content in real-time based on learner performance, the tool allows for radical personalization in heterogeneous classrooms—a task often deemed a "mission impossible" for instructors working alone Drawing on longitudinal learning analytics and systematic student feedback collected over multiple cycles, the presentation highlights how AI-driven data enables more targeted instructional decision-making. Far from diminishing the teacher's role, these insights allow instructors to identify learning gaps more clearly and focus their human energy on the emotional and ethical dimensions of social interaction. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how micro-adaptive AI can be embedded into existing curricula to strengthen formative assessment and enhance instructional coherence. Ultimately, the session demonstrates that by leveraging AI for personalized drills and vocabulary development, we can reaffirm the human factor by freeing teachers to focus on high-level cognitive and social development.
