Abstract:

Assessing student writing is a complex and time-consuming task, especially in pre-academic and academic English courses where learners are still developing accuracy, clarity, and confidence. Teachers often face challenges related to subjectivity, consistency, and the ability to provide detailed, timely feedback to every student. In this presentation, I demonstrate how I used artificial intelligence to support the assessment of writing for English language learners at CEFR A2–B1 level in a student-centred learning environment. The focus is on the pedagogical design of AI-assisted rubrics and CEFR-aligned can-do statements that were used to evaluate students’ written work in a clear, transparent, and consistent way. I show how AI tools were used to generate structured feedback that highlights strengths, identifies areas for improvement, and offers practical suggestions for revision and future writing tasks. Through concrete classroom examples, the presentation illustrates how AI-supported assessment helped reduce teacher workload, minimize human bias, and improve grading consistency, while keeping the teacher in full control of standards and decision-making. The presentation argues that when used thoughtfully, AI can enhance writing assessment by making feedback more accessible, timely, and meaningful for learners, while supporting teachers in maintaining high pedagogical and ethical standards.
