Title: Start Human: Reconceptualising Academic Literacies in the Age of AI

Name of presenter: Dr Odette Vassallo

Abstract:

The rapid increase in the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in higher education is often framed as a conflict between human and machine. This plenary workshop reframes this tension as a pedagogical opportunity by approaching GenAI through an academic literacies lens, where writing is understood as a socially situated and a genre‑mediated practice. By integrating genre‑based pedagogy with metacognitive strategies, I propose a framework that builds on the process‑oriented approach to writing by integrating critical reflection and ethical engagement with AI.

Drawing on classroom practices from an academic literacies programme designed to build independent writing confidence, this session introduces a model for purposeful interaction with AI, guided by the core principle: Start human. Stay human. Use AI to reveal, not replace your voice. I demonstrate a structured five-stage framework designed to preserve student agency in the age of generative AI. The process moves from human-first creation, through a strategic transition into AI-mediated writing, to critical partnership, deep revision and reflective integration.

The session will also explore how assessment can be realigned to value rhetorical awareness, oral justification of reasoning in source synthesis, and insightful reflection on the co-creative process. It offers adaptable pedagogical strategies that encourage habit formation and position novice writers as reflective, active participants in an evolving landscape of academic discourse.
